Music occupies a central role in daily life at Reed's and the school enjoys an enviable musical reputation, both locally and further afield. From the many services in our beautiful Chapel to performances throughout the year to the many instrumental ensembles and individual lessons the department is a vibrant and flourishing one, run by a team of dedicated music staff and peripatetic teachers. We are an ambitious and accessible department committed to the ideal of providing inspirational, innovative teaching at all levels.
Reed’s Chapel Choir is invited to sing annually at St. Paul’s Cathedral and the department stages regular musical events at venues in London and at School. Recent highlights include the school’s Bicentenary Concert at the Royal Festival Hall and the choir’s performance for Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. Other recent and forthcoming events include the staging of Neil Hannon’s opera ‘Sevastopol’ and a large-scale performance of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells 2 at St John’s, Smith Square, London. The department has also staged musical events at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle; Dorking Halls; Cadogan Hall, Chelsea; Sadler's Wells Theatre; Southwark Cathedral; Christ Church, Oxford; Chichester Cathedral; Epsom Playhouse and St Martin of Tours Church, Epsom and many other venues.
The Music School is a wonderful, spacious and purpose-built building equipped with a recital room containing our beautiful new Steinway piano; a state-of-the-art recording studio; a percussion room; composition rooms, a keyboard studio and a suite of practice cells. The department has a number of academic staff who bring an extensive breadth of experience to their teaching, providing pupils with a huge variety of musical opportunities at the highest level, under the leadership of the Director of Music, Iain Carnegie. Around 25 high-calibre peripatetic teachers complement the full-time staff, teaching over 200 individual lessons to pupils each week on a wide variety of instruments.
