Entry Process

Prospective pupils are considered for entry for day and boarding places at 11+, 13+ and Sixth Form. There are three main points of entry for boys: First Form (Year 7), Third Form (Year 9) and the Lower Sixth (Year 12). Girls are admitted into the Lower Sixth (Year 12). Places occasionally become available in other year groups; please contact the Admissions Office for further details.

Entry at 11+

The list for 11+ Entry in 2018 will close on Thursday 30th November 2017. For entry in future years, a Registration Form can be submitted at any time.

STEP 1

For entry to Reed’s in September 2018 at 11+ please submit a Registration Form and the £100 non-refundable Registration Fee to the Admissions Office by Thursday, 30th November 2017. 

STEP 2

Prospective pupils will be required to sit the School’s 11+ Entry Test held on Sunday 14th January 2018.  
The Entry Test consists of papers in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning.

The English paper (50 minutes) will be in two parts, a Comprehension (multiple choice) and a piece of Creative Writing. The Mathematics paper (50 minutes) will consist of Questions testing numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages and ratios, basic algebra, data handling and problem solving.  The Verbal Reasoning tests (50 minutes) are 11+ multiple-choice papers set by GL Assessment.

Past test papers are not published; however, Verbal Reasoning Practice packs, published by GL Assessment, can be obtained online or from most reputable stationers.

Boys will also have a short interview where they will be able to talk about themselves and their interests.  A confidential report from the candidate’s current school will also be obtained.

STEP 3

Based on the results of the Reed’s Entry Test and the report from the prospective pupil’s current school, offers wil be sent out by letter from the Headmaster on Thursday 25th January 2018.

STEP 4

We require confirmation of acceptance of a place at Reed’s along with payment of the Acceptance Deposit of £1,000 to be received by Monday 5th March 2018. 

ENTRY AT 13+

The list for 13+ Entry in 2020 will close on Thursday 30th November 2017. For entry in future years, a Registration Form can be submitted at any time.

STEP 1

For entry to Reed’s in September 2020 at 13+ please submit a Registration Form and the £100 non-refundable Registration Fee to the Admissions Office by Thursday, 30th November 2017.

STEP 2

Prospective pupils will be required to sit the School’s Pre-test held on Sunday 28th January 2018, two-and-a-half years before their proposed date of entry.

STEP 3

Based on the results of the Reed's Pre-test and the report from the prospective pupil's current school conditional offers (subject to Common Entrance test results) will be sent out by the Headmaster on Wednesday 7th February 2018.

STEP 4

We require confirmation of acceptance of a place at Reed’s along with payment of the Acceptance Deposit of £3,000 to be received by Thursday, 8th March 2018.  

Those who pass the Pre-test will then be required to take Common Entrance in June of 2020. We require a minimum 60% average on the ‘qualifying papers’: Mathematics, English, Science and French (or another foreign language).  A similar standard is expected for the other Common Entrance papers in Geography, History and Religious Studies; Latin, Spanish and German are optional.  

Prospective pupils who are likely to exceed an average of 75% at Common Entrance are encouraged to sit the Common Scholarship papers (please refer to the Scholarships page for further Information).

Prospective pupils attending schools where Common Entrance is not offered, can sit Reed's own Entry Test in English, Mathematics, Science and a Modern Language. Previous school reports are also taken into consideration.

STEP 5

Places are confirmed at the beginning of June of 2020 following the results of the Common Entrance tests and the report from the candidate's current school.

ENTRY AT SIXTH FORM

The list for 16+ Entry in 2018 closes on Wednesday 18th October 2017. For entry in future years, a Registration Form can be submitted at any time.

STEP 1

For entry to Reed’s in the Sixth Form, please submit a completed Registration Form and the £100 non-refundable Registration Fee should be submitted to the Admissions Office by Wednesday 18th October 2017.

STEP 2

Prospective pupils will be required to sit the Entry Test held on Friday 10th November 2017. All candidates will be examined in two academic subjects (chosen from those they are currently studying for GCSE/IGCSE and preferably subjects they wish to study at A Level) and also sit a Verbal Reasoning Paper (45 minutes).

Candidates will also take part in a critical thinking lesson in groups of ten. There will be opportunities for individual responses as well as group work; the 50-minute lesson will end with a summative piece of work which will be assessed alongside the candidate’s approach to the lesson. No revision or content preparation will be required.

Prospective pupils will also be interviewed by a member of staff. A reference and predicted grades will be requested from the candidate’s current school.

STEP 3

Based on the results of the Reed’s Entry Test and the reports from the candidate’s current school, unconditional offers of places will be made by the Headmaster on Friday, 1st December 2017.

STEP 4

We require confirmation of acceptance of a place at Reed’s along with payment of the Acceptance Deposit of £1,000 to be made by Tuesday 12th December 2017. 

STEP 5

Further information regarding subject choices and joining instructions will be sent during the following term, along with an invitation to a Sixth Form A Level options evening held in February 2018 and the Sixth Form Garden Party held in June 2018.

ENTRY FROM OVERSEAS

Applications are welcome from candidates who live overseas; they will be expected to take the appropriate Entry Tests for their age group.
