Putting on the ‘Squeeze’ with Chris Difford

Back

In the latest instalment of our annual ‘Invitation’ series of concerts, the Reed’s community was privileged to host a genuine rock ’n roll legend, Chris Difford — founding member and songwriter from Squeeze.

Despite great anticipation from Chris Difford’s not insubstantial fanbase at Reed’s, it is fair to say that the evening was characterised by mutual appreciation. When members of the band first encountered Chris in rehearsal, many were in awe of his generosity of spirit, cheeky self-deprecation, pathos and paradoxically life-affirming nihilism. He duly reciprocated with genuine love and respect for our wonderful ensemble of vocalists, horn players and rhythm section.

Chris weaved greatest hits from Squeeze and his solo catalogue into a wonderful tapestry of witty anecdotes; the audience were touched and inspired by his unique combination of flagrant talent and warm humility. Fabulously full and rich arrangements of Up the Junction, Cool For Cats, Labelled With Love, Tempted and other favourites were performed with incredible musicality by the large pop ensemble. Chris was clearly very moved by the experience of performing his back catalogue with such talented young people, and the audience was as warm and appreciative as any audience we have ever had at Reed’s.
