Economics reflects the changing and dynamic nature of markets and of national and international economies. The subject is both relevant and stimulating, motivating pupils to question the ‘status quo’. Pupils learn to use the tools of economic analysis and apply them to everyday situations as well as to specific economic problems. They learn to interpret a wide range of written, graphical and numerical data, developing their selectivity, building well-argued analysis. All of this develops pupils' confidence to articulate and justify their conclusions.
Economics is studied at A Level at Reed’s and the course specification introduces students to economic concepts through real-world business contexts.
To complement their studies, pupils enter the Target 2.0 competition, assuming the role of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England. There is also an active Economics Society which hosts and attends lectures at a number of prestigious venues, such as the Royal Economic Society, Eton College, the Bank of England and the Institute of Economic Affairs. A keen interest in current affairs is essential to make the most of learning Economics.
This qualification enables pupils to progress on to an Economics degree or a degree that combines Economics with another subject such as Politics or Philosophy. For many top Economics degrees, Mathematics will need to be studied to A Level. Studying Economics can also complement other subjects and can add breadth to an Arts or Science subject choice orientation.
