A Magical Maths Lecture at RGS Guildford

Back

Some of the top mathematicians in the Third Form joined several other schools in attending a Magical Maths lecture at RGS Guildford. It was delivered by Dr Ben Sparks, who is based at Bath University but also works part time with the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme. Once pupils had sworn the ‘Magicians Oath’ they explored three seemingly magical feats - first through considering patterns but then incorporating algebra and the properties of numbers to discover the real magic behind each illusion. Success in anything in life takes practice, so don’t be surprised if they stop you to demonstrate their new-found ability to cube root huge numbers or to memorise a book in 30 seconds!
