A New Co-educational Chapter
In May 2026 Reed's School announced its decision to move to becoming a fully co-educational school and that we are welcoming Feltonfleet School into the Reed's family of schools.
We are delighted to be able to welcome girls to our First Form (Year 7) from September 2027 and Third Form (Year 9) from September 2029. Entry to the Sixth Form for girls and boys continues unchanged, with the next intake arriving in September 2026. The Headmaster, Mark Hoskins, explains the development in the short film at the bottom of this page.

WHY IS REED’S EXPANDING ITS CO-EDUCATIONAL PROVISION?
Reed’s was founded as a co-educational school for orphans in 1813 and only became single sex after the Second World War.
Our co-educational Sixth Form has been heavily oversubscribed for many years. The outcomes at A Level for our Upper Sixth pupils, boys and girls, have been excellent and feedback from both current and prospective parents has consistently been: “Why doesn’t Reed’s take girls at 11?”
With two successful co-educational preparatory schools now in the Foundation, we believe this is the right time to make this change. By extending co-education to all year groups, we are returning to our founder, Rev. Andrew Reed’s original vision and extending the reach of the Foundation to support girls and boys of all ages who have lost one or both parents.

WHAT WILL BE THE TIMELINE FOR GIRLS JOINING YEAR 7 AT REED’S?
We will welcome girls into Year 7 from September 2027 and then progress organically throughout the School. The School will be fully co-educational by 2031. Sixth Form entry for girls and boys will continue throughout this period.
There are no plans to significantly increase the size of the School so class sizes will remain as they are now.
HOW WILL THE SCHOOL’S FACILITIES BE ADAPTED TO ACCOMMODATE THIS CHANGE?
At Reed’s we currently educate approximately 150 girls in the Sixth Form and therefore our facilities, in the most part, are already set up to accommodate this. However, there will be some additional modifications to the site rolled out as co-educational year groups progress through the School.
WILL THERE BE ANY CHANGES TO THE CURRICULUM?
The Academic Curriculum at Reed’s provides as broad an education as possible before pupils choose their optional GCSE/IGCSE and A Level subjects.
The Curriculum and Co-Curricular programme in our co-educational Sixth Form will be extended to girls in the lower years as well as our major sports and academy sports.
For girls our major sports are Netball, Hockey and Cricket; for boys our major sports are Rugby, Hockey and Cricket. Our Academy Sports are Golf, Tennis, Skiing and Swimming. Many other optional sports are also offered.
As part of this process, we will ensure that our subject choices, approach to teaching and learning, personal development programme, and activities fully support a co-educational environment.
HOW WILL YOU SUPPORT GIRLS JOINING THE SCHOOL?
Reed’s has welcomed girls into its Sixth Form for many decades, providing a strong foundation for their planned introduction from Year 7. All Year 7 pupils will benefit from a structured induction programme, with Sixth Form girls serving as mentors. Induction Days allow new pupils to meet staff, explore the campus, and build friendships before term begins.
From the start, girls will be fully integrated into the House system, with both female and male pastoral leads. In Years 7 and 8, the girls will join The Close, supported by dedicated staff focused on academic progress, co-curricular involvement, and pastoral wellbeing, ensuring they quickly feel settled and able to thrive.
WILL BOARDING BE AVAILABLE FOR GIRLS JOINING?
Boarding is a popular choice for girls in our Sixth Form. We will be extending the opportunity to board throughout the School.
WILL ADMISSIONS TO REED’S SCHOOL CHANGE?
Reed’s has strong relationships with a wide range of prep and primary schools and we will continue to work with and welcome applications from all of these schools.
Reed’s will continue to offer places to pupils for 11+/13+ from any primary and prep school based on their ISEB exam results and our on-site interview days.
Both Ripley Court School and Feltonfleet School also have strong links with all their destination schools and pupils will have a full choice for their senior school decision.
Admissions for entry to Reed’s in Sixth Form will remain the same.
WILL FOUNDATION PLACES BE AVAILABLE TO GIRLS APPLYING TO REED’S IN LOWER AND MIDDLE SCHOOL?
In keeping with the founding mission of Andrew Reed we will continue to offer Foundation places for any child who fits the Foundation’s criteria. This extension of our co-educational provision, successfully returns the charity to its original 1813 structure.
