Higher Education & Careers Overview
Higher Education and choosing a career path plays a fundamental part in being a Sixth Form student at Reed’s. Life beyond school can seem daunting and students seem to be faced with an ever increasing number of options and demands for their attention.
Through a structured programme, developed to raise aspirations at all levels and to provide support, Reed’s students go on to excel both at university and in the world of work beyond. The vast majority gain places at their first choice of university. To assist with Careers information and advice, Reed’s works closely with a number of external partners, including E C Careers, Morrisby testing service, Unifrog, InvestIn Education and a well-established Old Reedonian network. As part of our commitment to deliver high-quality careers guidance we are currently working towards the Investor in Careers Award.
A targeted programme of events to encourage students to start thinking about their career choices are introduced from the Third Form (Year 9) onwards. Bulletins providing details of opportunities where students can further explore Higher Education and Career options, as well as extending their knowledge of particular subjects and particular skill areas, are sent out on a regular basis and time is spent in tutor groups discussing careers.
The pastoral curriculum in all years focuses on providing personalised support a careers programme that addresses the needs of each pupil and various events through the year provide links between curriculum learning and career opportunities. The Fifth Form Employability Development Programme also targets particular areas of need, with workshops delivered by external partners and encouragement for pupils to encounter employers through broad work experience pathways.
Through our strong and vibrant links with our Old Reedonians, we are also able to offer students additional opportunities as part of their wider career development. As well as attending our Future Careers Fair, presenting at our FutureCareers Seminars and speaking at our FutureUni Fairs to share their experience and knowledge, our alumni are most generous of their time in offering advice to our students around possible work experience and future career prospects which often extends to beyond their time at Reed’s.
