Promoting academic excellence … ORs set the example

Back

Academic staff were joined by seven Old Reedonians who helped put our Oxbridge/Medic student candidates through their paces in a specially designed preparation twilight session.

The 32 Upper Sixth students had individual and in-depth interviews with an Old Reedonian who had studied the same or a related subject, such as Engineering, Classics, Natural Sciences, Medicine and Geography. It was particularly charming that OR, Dr Andy Cairns (Cambridge graduate) came along with his portable x-ray light box to get our budding medics to talk through what they saw in an MRI scan!

The ORs also gave insightful critiques of each student’s personal statement, offering tips and advice to make theirs stand out. The aim of the evening was to prepare our students for the challenging selection process that lay ahead, but - at the supper held afterwards - it was also wonderful to see them talking confidently on a more informal basis to the ORs about university life and subsequent careers.
