Tolkien and Pullman inspire on a visit to Oxford University

Back

A group of Fifth and Lower Sixth Form Academic Scholars visited to Oxford to get a taste for life at one of the world's top universities. The visit started with a walk around Christchurch, one of the most famous Oxford colleges (appearing in a number of films, such as Harry Potter) where Biology teacher, Dr Tam, who studied for his PhD at the college, entertained with a variety of anecdotes from his time there. This was followed with an informative tour of the Sheldonian Theatre and Bodleian Library, where some spectacular (and snowy) views of the city spires were also enjoyed.

After lunch, Head of Academic Music, Mrs Butler, showed students around her old alma mater, Exeter College, and was able to point out J.R.R. Tolkien’s room as well as Philip Pullman’s. The day culminated with an opportunity to explore any colleges or faculties in which a student had a particular interest. Everyone came away with a sense of excitement about what could lie ahead, and certainly a greater appreciation for the beauty and history of this prestigious university.
