The school's location so close to some beautful natural areas is really beneficial sometimes. The Geography Dept treated the 1st Form to a 'day in the local wilderness' for some river studies. Without a coach or minibus in sight it was also a very environmentally-friendly excursion! First stop - Oxshott Heath to explain management strategies for the local runners, horse riders and dog walkers. Then into Esher Common to discuss how the changing land-use of the area has resulted in the vegetation changing drastically from grass, heath and wetland habitats, to acidic podzols suited for alien pines. Final destination was Arbrook Common where the boys finally got a chance to put their wellies to the test and jump into the raging torrent – the River Rythe! Here they used CRADS (Calibrated River Acceleration Devices), supplied by NASA, to measure river velocity and meter rules to measure wetted perimeter and profile. An enjoyable and educational day out! . #geography #naturegeography #localenvironment

We are excited to celebrate that today marks the 100th anniversary of Reed's tenth Headmaster taking up his appointment on 1st May 1924 when the school was based at Watford! Rev. George Kendall Allen was 40 years old and in his short tenure he made many significant changes that still shape the school that we are today. His main aim was to create a sense of belonging and to re-focus on team spirit and achievement rather than just on the individual. He introduced house names with houses overseen by Housemasters; he redefined the role of the School Captain supported by School and House Prefects and he made rugby the main winter sport in place of football. One pupil recalled, “His arrival at Watford was like warm summer sunshine after a cold bleak winter.” #Headmaster #headmaster #schoolhistory #aremarkableman

Lower Sixth Economists enjoyed a visit to London today. First up was the Bank of England where they learnt about UK monetary policy and found out how heavy a real gold bar is! It was then off to Kings College University for a tour and a 'uni-style' lecture on "Behavioural Economics in Finance Decisions'. . #bankofengland #economists #goldbar #kingscollegelondon

Huge thanks to the @uniofsurrey @uosphysoc Physics and Astrophysics department for another brilliant lecture on hunting very faint (offensively so) galaxies. Dr Collins spoke passionately about her research and about the learning that comes from observations of these very faint galaxies and how they may lead us to know more about the dark matter that first seeded and now binds all galaxies. Our Sixth Form physics students also enjoyed the opportunity to look through telescopes and chat with @guildfordastro from the Stag Hill campus - some breathtaking sights! We look forward to returning in the Autumn!

As the Spring Term ends we look back on an exciting week. In Geography the Third Form designed and built their own earthquake-proof buildings out of spaghetti and marshmallows which were then tested by Mr Neat and Mr Moore shaking the desks. Only one 'building' withstood the quakes - congrats to Heath, Murray, Ollie and Jonny who expertly designed a counterweight which made their building indestructible! In History a group of L6 students each put their case for the British Prime Minister they believe should be regarded as the greatest we’ve ever had. The premiers plucked from the realms of History ranged from the obligatory Churchill through to the undeservedly unknown Lord Salisbury. An open debate ensued with questions raining down from the audience - the results of both the judges’ vote and the public vote will be revealed at the start of next term! #earthquakes#geography#history#greatestprimeminster#curiosity

Lower Sixth Form students recreated the Periodic Table out of homemade cookies. The final product was a fine example of teamwork and creativity. After the Periodic Table was made, the cookies were then sold in aid if The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Well done to all the students involved. All the students involved in Lower Sixth Form collaborated to construct a representation of the Periodic Table using cookies they made themselves. The end result showcased their exceptional teamwork and innovative thinking. The cookies were sold and the proceeds will support @royalmarsden Cancer Charity. #royalmarsden #periodictable #chemistry #science #compassion

With a huge thanks to @swiftsgolf Freddie Edmunds @wellington_golf and to all the staff @thespringsgolfclub for a brilliant few days. The players love the opportunity of regular, competitive 54-hole strokeplay events; win, lose or draw there is always fun had and things to learn. Well done to Reed’s A Finlay F, Matthew K, James B and James P for holding on for the team win! And to Harry H, Jasmine K, Josh J and Gryffyn S for the best-placed of the B teams! Everyone contributing! James B missed out on the individual for another 3rd place finish, but another classy showing. Onwards and upwards, @reeds.golf Club Champs and two day camp next week!
