Historians in the Lower Sixth took part in a debate to decide History's Greatest Battle. They faced a panel of History judges more fearsome to face than a phalanx of Alexander the Great's infantry! Having drawn up their plan of attack beforehand, each student was allotted three minutes to present their argument before the debate turned into a fierce melee when the judges and members of the audience were allowed to thrust their questions in. These were parried with aplomb and there were counter-attacks galore raging back and forth across the debating chamber. A truly entertaining and erudite event! Polls are now open for their peers to vote for the student who made the best case for their battle. Will Agincourt finally have met its Waterloo? Will Stalingrad sink the Spanish Armada? Weekends at Reed's are often full of extra curricular activities for our pupils - all part of building independence & resilience. Last weekend, groups of 3rd & 4th Forms (yrs 9&10) enjoyed Bronze and Silver DofE Practice Expeditions - valuable learning experiences, giving the boys a real taste of what’s to come in their assessed expeditions next month. Celebrations to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day have been in full flow here today. It started with a whole School Assembly devoted to educating pupils on the significance of VE day and why it is so important to mark this occasion. The highlight was undoubtedly a film of Old Reedonian, 93-year-old Bill Collins, recounting his own memories of WWII and VE Day in particular when he was only 13 years old. The library was converted into a VE Day ‘hub’ for pupils to immerse themselves in WWII themed activities - these included sending messages by Morse code on devices made during DT lessons and cracking German military codes using a virtual enigma machine. Younger pupils enjoyed making models of tanks in wood, card and paper origami and the exhibition of wartime food was very popular! . #veday80thanniversary #VEDay @reedsalumni @lib_rarycat

Apparently it's the hottest start to May ever today! So we opened up the outdoor Summer Library to ensure that pupils can read, revise and play chess in the fresh air and enjoy the beautiful surroundings we are so lucky to have at Reed's. First Form Geographers marched into the local woods this week beaming with excitement to be spending the day outside in such glorious sunshine! It started with a magnificent lecture from a local expert on the Oxshott Heath ecosystem, Mr Clapp (jnr), who imparted his knowledge on geology, wildlife and history. The boys learnt how to use quadrats and how to identify species along a transect to determine if management of the ecosystem has been successful. The second half of the day included river studies where excitement was high when Mr Douthwaite introduced them to the high tech CRAD'S (Calibrated River Acceleration Devices) that they would be using to measure river velocity. The opportunity to stand in the river in wellies carrying out fieldwork studies was the highlight of the day though! . #geography #ecosystem #riverstudies

Reed's had a fantastic win at the Trinity Schools Book Award ceremony held at Emanuel School recently. Kaiden F, Harry Z and Teddy W won the best creative response with a brilliant board game inspired by the book Bite Risk.
