Reed's In The News
11/11/2024
The whole school gathered together at 11am this morning to honour the Old Reedonians who served and died for us, especially those who may have no one else to remember them. Rev Winter led us in a short service where he acknowledged the horror of all war and the courage of the people who choose to face danger on behalf of others, including those serving today in the armed forces, as well as the other emergency services. He urged us to to commit ourselves to avoiding war and violence where possible and instead pursue peace and justice within our own communities.
The Corps of Drums also led proceedings in Cobham High Street yesterday with our CCF cadets supporting them.

Six students from the Upper & Lower Sixth Forms participated in the annual UK Maths Trust, Maths Olympiad for Girls. This is a gruelling 2.5 hour written paper consisting of only 5 questions. The girls did extremely well. Alexia, Eleni and Hannah were awarded merit certificates and Mariia gained a distinction!
One of the questions is shown in the photos - see if you can solve it!!

#ThrowBackThursday to take a look at the many trips that took place over half term for our pupils.
CCF cadets had an exhilarating week of adventure training in the stunning Peak District. Challenging activities included mountain biking, canoeing, some very successful raft building and, definitely the highlight, caving which tested the cadets’ courage and grit as they spent four hours underground.
Sixty-one 2nd & 3rd Form pupils enjoyed a fun-packed 4 days in Barcelona. They visited many iconic buildings such as La Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera and Park Guell. They also enjoyed a tour of the Barcelona FC Stadium Camp Nou and the Boquería market. Language improvement was the major focus of the trip, helped by attending a language school along with many Spanish workbooks. The highlight for the boys was, without doubt, eating churros con chocolate and having delicious tapas under the glorious Spanish sun!
In another sunny location a netball and boys tennis tour to Dubai saw many successful matches taking place along with some incredible sightseeing – from the famous Sheikh Zayed Mosque to a water park and a large Dubai Mall with waterfalls, aquariums and an ice rink. The pupils also enjoyed a spectacular fountain & light show, and a yacht cruise rounded off a truly memorable week!
Huge thanks to all the teachers who took time out from their holidays to ensure our pupils get an enriching and fun education. 👏👏👏

BEST YOUTH PRODUCTION & BEST DIRECTOR!! 🏆🏆🥇🥇
Not quite the Oscars, but at the largest amateur drama festival in the country, the Woking Drama Festival, Reed's achieved a brilliant sweep of prizes! GCSE Drama students who staged the play, 'Pity' by Rory Mullarkey, were thrilled that judges described their production as "an extraordinary play...showed huge amounts of discipline and concentration...clear how much work had gone into it".
Along with 3 nominations for Best Actor and a nomination for Technical Excellence, director Mr Silk described it as "a brilliant achievement for all involved" and we are in complete agreement with that sentiment!
They are now eligible to participate in the National Festival in July 2025.

Just before half term A Level English students enjoyed a visit from Professor Daljit Nagra, award-winning poet and broadcaster. He held an in-depth discussion and reading of his acclaimed poem, ‘Look We Have Coming to Dover!’ As one of the poems on the A Level curriculum, Nagra was able to give insight behind the poem on his parent’s immigration, personalising the story he portrays. The session also consisted of group activities, sharing collected ideas on his poems, and was filled with wonderful opportunities to discuss these ideas with the poet himself.

The History department seized the opportunity to celebrate Black History Month to redress some of the imbalances of history by bestowing a truly worthy black hero who would be largely unknown to the Reed’s community as our ‘Unsung Hero from History’. After each of the 4 nominees was introduced in Assembly the whole school was tasked with casting a vote for who they think is most deserving of greater recognition.
Mr Lees kicked off to prove that Dr Harold Moody’s endeavours to provide free medical care for his community in Peckham before World War II embodied every Reed’s School value going. Miss Souter countered this by revealing the little-known story of Senedu Gebru, the freedom-fighting educational pioneer for women’s education in Ethiopia. Mr Waller sought to prove that it was baseball player Jackie Robinson who spearheaded the movement to end segregation in twentieth century America. Finally, Mr Hulmes produced a tour de force of a speech about Toussaint L’Ouverture’s impact in leading a revolution to destroy slavery in Haiti.
After 3 days of campaigning and 700 votes cast the 2 front runners, Jackie Robinson and Toussaint L'Ouverture, battled it out. It was the man who broke baseball's colour barrier and paved the way for desegregation in the United States who was the victor!

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, CCF and the Arts Programme are all offered as part of our Service Afternoon for Third Form (Year 9) pupils and above. This week pupils were engaged in a variety of events to further these activities.
CCF cadets embarked on their first training exercise to learn the basic skills and knowledge of field craft and Skill at Arms (SAA).
For the Arts Programme, a group of 4th Form pupils went to two iconic galleries in London to deepen their engagement with the arts.
An outbreak of ‘heart attacks’, ‘broken bones’, ‘allergic reactions’ and ‘chokings’ had to be dealt with as the entire 3rd Form undertook a full day of First Aid training gaining a nationally recognised qualification as part of their Bronze DofE.
The boys doing the Silver DofE practice expedition were treated to some far from accurate forecasting with Ranmore Common suffering rain, rain and even more rain for most of the day. Our core values of responsibility and resilience were key to their success on this occasion!

Littlehampton Beach was the destination last week for 5th Form Geographers to investigate longshore drift for their exam. The pupils learnt about the coastal management strategies present at East beach, before heading to West beach to conduct experiments to prove whether longshore drift was occurring. They used equipment such as digital calipers, ranging poles and clinometers to produce data. Highlight of the day was definitely the fish & chip lunch though!
