Our Sixth Form and Third Form teams triumphed at the recent @SurreySatro competition winning 2nd and 3rd places respectively! The challenge had an environmental theme of ‘No More Hunger!’ involving both logistical & engineering skills. The aim was to produce a fully working, engineered product, made with the minimum amount of sustainable materials. #Engineering #sustainability

Navigating the options available after GCSEs and A Levels is probably one of the most difficult paths teenagers have to follow. As part of our extensive programme to prepare pupils for the future we held a FutureUni Post-18 Options Webinar with five recent leavers who kindly shared their individual educational journeys offering advice and insight into what went right, or wrong, and how that shaped their futures. The advice ranged from: taking a GAP year to gain some skills; making sure you do extensive research on universities; noting that there are always options to change if you feel you chose the wrong course to explaining the route to studying abroad and why you should consider degree apprenticeships. The 200 odd pupils who signed up to watch the webinar - as well as invited pupils from local state schools - certainly learnt a lot in the hour it took to deliver! Huge thanks to the Old Reedonians who so kindly gave their time for this fascinating insight into their educational journeys. . #furthereducation #gapyearlife #DegreeApprenticeships #studyingabroad @reedsalumni

Which young boy doesn't love a paper plane? The Second Form started an Aviation Engineering Day with a paper plane competion. By the end of the day they'd conducted a feasibility study to establish whether the technology used to launch jet fighters could also be used for commercial airlines and reduce fuel consumption of planes, increasing sustainability. After hours of design, construction, and studying the science behind how to load weights onto an aeroplane, pupils tested their foam aeroplane inventions. Some flew the full length of the Assembly Hall, and some went backwards, but the boys approached the day with a superb amount of creativity, enthusiasm and interest. . #engineering #aviationengineering #stemeducation #curiosity

#ThrowbackThursday to last week when Old Reedonian, Hamza, gave Academic Scholars a tour of Oxford University. Hamza is a first-year undergrad and he showed off his college, Christ Church, as well as sharing a selection of top tips for applying to Oxbridge. An afternoon scavenger hunt round the city gave pupils a sense of the college system and the chance to explore the treasure trove of monuments. . #oxforduniversity #oxbridge #christchurchcollege @reedsalumni

Fantastic to see L6 Biologists flexing their teaching skillls by mentoring Second Form pupils. They led a group practical investigating breathing rate immediately before and after a form of exercise. After much exertion - star jumps, push ups and on-the-spot sprints - the younger pupils used the data collected by the Sixth Formers to work out different exercises affect breathing rate and why. . #mentoring #teachingskills

An intrepid group of 4th Formers visited an open-air Art Exhibition in London to see 18 sculptures scattered around the capital. After walking 15km in very cold conditions of -4 their visit to a warm pizza restuarant for lunch was very welcome! In the afternoon the boys visited the Antony Gormley exhibition,Body Postive, showing figures assuming a variety of everyday poses. . #artexhibition #antonygormley

As the first week of term is now fully underway here are some #throwback photos to events that took place over the holidays. The Santa Fun Run at Painshill on a glorious winter morning drew over 110 runners - students, staff and parents (plus a few dogs!) raised an incredible £1,200 for Rainbow Trust Children's Charity. The Ski Racers had a hugely successful time at the Canada Cup Festival. The A team won the Team Parallel slalom; Max K won silver in the Grand Slalom and gold in the Slalom with Josh G coming in just behind him in silver. Some good performances from Elijah M helped them all win the U14 team gold medals. The senior girls team dominated their races and, by beating most of the boys in the overall timings, allowed them to be crowned U18 champions! The Golf development squad and some Academy players visited Amendoeira in Portugal for some challenging golf competitions. At the O’Conor Jr course Arno C came first in the Stableford competition, with Jake R coming 3rd overall, but first for Reed’s in the scratch competition. Zach P made a hole in one too! At the very technical Silves Course, Orson J won the overall scratch competition. On the final day at the Faldo course winners were Kit W in the Stableford competition who came 3rd overall, and Saahir K for the scratch competition who also came 3rd overall. . #itneverstops #happynewyear2024

We've had many Christmas celebrations here this week as the term closes and we wish all our pupils, parents & staff a wonderful holiday. From the Boarders' Christmas Dinner where pupils enjoyed a fun-filled evening (throwing hoops onto the Head & Senior Deputy's blow-up antlers was definitely a highlight!) to the Staff Children's Xmas Party with a visit from a 'special' man to this morning's staff carol singers who enthusiastically sang to pupils arriving for school. See you all back in 2024!! . #happychristmas2023 #happynewyear2024

How much do you know about the history of Reed's School? Did you know that in 1924 the new Headmaster, Rev. George Kendall Allen, introduced the House system and Rugby. And were you aware that in 1821 James Edmeston published the famous hymn “Lead Us, Heavenly Father, Lead Us” expressly for the children of the London Orphan Asylum (as we were known then)? If you'd like to find out more, take a look at our updated timeline via the link in our bio Linktree. . #history #schoolhistory

A collection of curious, keen geographers from the Fifth and Sixth Forms attended a lecture at the Royal Geographical Society entitled ‘Are Countries Meeting their Climate Change Targets?’ An expert panel including CEOs, Climate Change Scientists and Politicians discussed how much progress has been made towards the world’s 1.5degree global warming target. With COP28 happening over the next few weeks in the UAE it was a crucial moment for the audience to take stock and consider ways to help mitigate against climate change. Messrs Clapp senior and junior (who took the trip) reported that the students were a credit to the School and got to experience what university geography might entail! . #royalgeographicalsociety #ClimateChange #cop28uae
